De la riva guard: The little details

One annoying/effective guard in BJJ is the De La Riva guard (named after professor De La Riva). It is a form of open guard that creates a very tangled "weave" of the legs, and provides a large number of sweeping/back taking options.

Because of the entangled nature of this position, it is more difficult to pass (especially in the gi) than a lot of other guards.

Although the grips vary depending on who you watch use the guard, some principles always remain the same.

i.e. The person using DLR guard always wants to be at an angle to the person on top, and controls distance using BOTH feet.

Here is an amazing video featuring Shawn Williams showing a very methodical way to pass this guard.

Hey, Just a little history on the De La Riva guard. Carlson Gracie taught that guard to De La Riva, but De La Riva was the one to make it famous. Carlson original called it the jello guard :)

Wow, that looks very complicated.

Another great instructional video... just not a beginner technique!

It seems this pass is exceptionally vulnerable to a sweep. Once tori places the under-hook and traps his right arm under uke's left shoulder, uke's right leg is under tori's left (base) leg. Tori is then high on his left rear with uke's leg under his base and pinned to the ground on his right front. Someone playing DLR guard will likely be an adept sweeper. This pass seems to give the uke a gift. Uke can reach over and grab tori's belt with his left hand and its an "elevator sweep" made in heaven.

Instead of stuffing uke's right leg under tori's left thigh, what about pushing the foot to the outside of the leg and then dropping the knee over uke's thigh as tori drops in for the underhook? This would disable the sweeping mechanism.
